Anthurium

The Hybrid Anthurium:

The hybrid anthurium, a perennial herbaceous plant, is cultivated for its attractive and long lasting blooms. The flower is comprised of a colorful leaf called the spathe. It holds hundreds of small botanical flowers on a pencil-like mound called the spadix which rises from the centre of the spathe.

The farms in Saint lucia grow a high volume of hybrid anthuriums. They are choosing to specialize in this flower because the small island ecosystem provides an ideal growing environment for the hybrid anthuriums. These plants have been imported from Europe and grown to achieve a high standard of quality for export to regional and international markets. The anthuriums will reach the consumer with long stems, uniformity of color, uniformity of size, proper maturity, glossiness of the spathe, and freedom from damage and disease.

Saint Lucia is continuing to innovate and diversify their flower holdings. Farmers are continually testing new varieties of plants on the island and varieties of the hybrid anthuriums are being imported continuously. Currently, our farmers are harvesting the following in abundance:

Caribbean Pink Anthuriums:

The ‘Caribbean Pink’ anthurium is a specialty tropical bloom of Saint Lucia. The delicate heart-shaped bloom consists of a pastel pink to cream coloured spadix and a rich glossy pink smooth spath. These flowers are available year-round and are sold by the case.

Packaging:

All anthuriums are packaged in 120cm x 33 cm x 12 cm cardboard boxes for export to regional and international markets. The anthuriums are packaged to prevent abrasion by placing moist shredded paper at the bottom of the box and in-between the flowers. They are then covered with plastic to seal in the moisture. Each box is closed is closed and taped with clear tape and is store in a cool environment.

Care and Handling:

Upon receiving your hybrid anthuriums, unpack the flowers carefully and immediately. Make sure to not injure the spadix by creasing or folding the heart-shaped part of the flower, this will cause the injured areas to darken. Trim a half-an-inch to an inch off the stems using a sharp knife or pruning shears. If the flowers are wilted or flaccid upon unpacking, submerge the whole flowers for 10 – 15 minutes in 70 to 80 degree F water. Place the flowers in a clean vase with clean water (you can add floral preservatives if you would like). Avoid storing anthuriums at temperatures lower than 55 degrees F for any length of time. Avoid storing in direct sunlight or near fruits and vegetables as the ethylene gas will age the blooms prematurely.
